Countdown to War

We plan to bring the devil to you in a series beginning Sunday evening. Okay. We can't do that, nor would we want to. But he is lurking, and if your pastor won't talk about it, we will write about it.

It's easy for humans to fall into traps. But woe to us if we don't follow the One who unlocks traps, forgives and puts us on the road to eternal life.

God's Damage Control

When Pharisees sought to engage Jesus in discussing divorce laws, Jesus shows no interest. He offered a higher principle predating the Mosaic codes.

"Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning ...said... The two shall become one flesh. So, they are no longer two but one flesh" (Matt. 19:4-6).

An article in WORLD magazine says, "This is our first clue why in Moses' time God regulated human practices rather than abolishing them. We are doing damage control at this point. Slavery is universal; polygamy is common; and killing is a fact of life."

"God quarantines a tribe for his possession, giving them instructions for mitigating harm. Jesus spells out the divine rationale himself: 'Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.'"

"It was easier to get the Israelites out of Egypt than to get Egypt out of the Israelites. Abraham, Jacob and David had multiple wives, and God did not make an issue of it. His people would have to learn the hard way that having two wives simultaneously is not ideal."

"Jesus told his disciples, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now" (John 16:12).

"God dispenses just the truths we need at just the time we need them."
