Full Participation for All
First, we thank you for including our blog in your daily reading. You also read what other people write. That's diversity.
And we appreciate your fairness in considering our attitude about ongoing events. That's equity.
Finally, it is nice to be included in your reading habits, taking time out of your busy day to read Views. That's inclusion.
Diversity, equity and inclusion. DEI.
Good progress we're making, after decades of sameness, injustice and discrimination.
We do have some questions. Why hire an airplane mechanic, regardless of race, if he doesn't have the essential skill? If he or she is very well qualified - go for it. This is a matter of life and death.
Why staff Secret Service with full participation in mind, when persons with extraordinary ability must be chosen to protect our leaders? It only takes one mistake or overlook to cost someone their life. If they can hire the most qualified, while achieving DEI, okay.
There are occupations where safety is essential for all races and both sexes, all employees and we the people. We all have a stake.
In human resources at a Westinghouse office of electric transformer designers, each year I reported to the government how many employees we had - professional and nonprofessional - and how many were white or non-white. There were government targets, based on the location for secretaries etc., and nationally for professionals.
We never met the target for black design +engineers, because those coming out of college and others had more desirable opportunities than sitting at a desk all day. So, there is that. No full participation for all.

PS. Be thankful there are engineers willing to sit at a desk all day. Without them, and other workers, we have no alternating-current electricity. Back to candles and horses.
PS. Don't miss our next blog: Disgruntled losers. Seriously!
