Two Testaments, One Story
We begin a series - alternating among other topics - of Old Testament scriptures that mention Christ (the Messiah) in various ways. Some, directly quoted in the New Testament. Others, the topic repeated in the NT, but not word for word.
Might as well begin with Hebrews, 1:1-2, in the New Testament: In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. That deserves to be the first two verses in the NT. Oh well.
Let's include verse 3. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.
Hebrews likely was written to Jewish Christians outside of Palestine. Many people were enamored with angels, so the author asked, For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son, today I have become your Father?"
Jesus himself said he had come to fulfill the Law and the Prophets - Matthew 5:17. Christ also came to suffer the death sentence we all deserve. Our response involves faith, hope and love.
After his resurrection, Jesus explained from the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms - three main divisions of the Hebrew OT - that God predicted everything that happened to him- Luke 24:25-27; 44-46.
