Protecting Financial Info
While millions of people are exchanging their Christmas gifts today, you might want to consider tips to protect your financial information.
The Federal Trade Commission fields over a million reports of identity theft each year. Credit card fraud was the worst. 2024 saw the largest data breaches in history, impacting billions of users. Some tips:
Strong unique passwords. Have several different, complex passwords for each online account. Use a password manager to help store unique passwords. Strong passwords should be at least 16 characters with a random string of mixed-case letters, numbers and symbols.
Use two-factor authentication. We just used this (2FA) for the first time. It adds an extra layer of security. It often comes by a texted or emailed code that is entered to log into an account.
Protect identification numbers. Don't carry a Social Security card in a wallet or give out your SS number unnecessarily.
Be cautious on the phone when answering emails. Scammers can mislead you by using seemingly legitimate phone numbers or email addresses.
Regularly check accounts. Double-check all financial accounts periodically. Each year you are able to request and check a free credit report from Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.
