Not by righteousness
Chapter 9. Israel's possession of the land was not a reward for their faithfulness. Rather, it was God's gracious gift based on his love and mercy. Moses warned that continued possession of the land was contingent on their perseverance in faith and obedience.
Chapter 10. "And now O Israel, what does the Lord ask of you?" Repeatedly, God emphasized the necessity of love that comes from the heart. God did not want his people to substitute heart felt love with mere outward religious forms such as keeping the commandments, offering sacrifices etc.
For New Testament believers, faith and love from the heart are also essential. It is possible to read Scripture, pray, and attend church without a heartfelt devotion to God. That is legalism. Outward obedience and religious practices have validity only if they are based on knowing Jesus Christ through sincere faith in and love for him...who he is and what he has done for us.
Chapter 11. God set before his people a choice - blessings or curses. Not everyone took God seriously.
New Testament believers have the same choice. To depart from God and his ways, we lose his presence, help and covenant protections.
